Join Monica Travel on a rich and rewarding city walk in Ystad, one of Skåne’s most charming towns. For many, Ystad is perhaps best known for its many half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and the tower watchman of St Mary’s Church. Others may immediately think of Kurt Wallander and the famous crime stories that have put the town on the map far beyond Sweden’s borders. But Ystad is more than a picture-postcard setting and a backdrop for crime fiction.
Ystad has a long history as a trading town, monastery town and coastal town. During our walk, we move at a gentle pace through the older quarters and follow the town’s development from medieval market town to the modern Ystad of today. We pause at Peter Boisen, the city architect who left a clear mark on Ystad’s history and helped shape the soul of the town long after his own time. And then, of course, there is Kurt Wallander. He may be a fictional character, but in Ystad he almost feels like a local resident. Wallander appears here and there during the walk, and we can reflect on how an invented, rather melancholy detective managed to put Ystad on the world map. Ystad is quite simply a town where the Middle Ages, the stone-built town and the fictional world of Wallander walk side by side, and where every street seems to have a story of its own to tell. I, Monica Åberg, have of course gathered stories, anecdotes and small details that bring the town to life. In my own personal way, I guide you through Ystad and share stories about the town’s history, the people who have lived and worked here, and the things in the streetscape that we might otherwise simply pass by. This is a city walk for anyone who wants to discover Ystad with fresh eyes, whether you are a visitor, a curious Skåne local or already know the town well. Welcome to four hours of history, sea breeze, half-timbered houses and Skåne storytelling, not forgetting a lovely coffee break. Practical Information:
